Oh, um, actually, Seattle Event Calendar added, I guess that should be mentioned. It's a Google calendar - which is great - but hard-wired to be pale blue. And therefore does not match my color scheme. This mildly bothers me every time I look at it.
I will be updating this most Fridays; Seattle has a ton of excellent food-related stuff to do and so check it out if you are local.
Some events to highlight (more details, contact info, etc., all in the calendar)...
Wednesday, November 14 - Vegetarians of Washington Gourmet Buffet
The Vegetarians of Washington are holding their monthly Gourmet Buffet this week. See the calendar for details. I haven’t been to this event, but I believe that Pranee Halvorsen of I Love Thai Cooking, has cooked for them in the past and her food is awesome, so I would think the bar might be high for these buffets.
Thursday, November 29 - Lauri Carter from Moxie at the FareStart Guest Chef’s Night
FareStart is a “job training and placement program for homeless and disadvantaged individuals,” and Thursdays are Guest Chef Night. The Guest Chefs work with the FareStart students to make a three-course meal for the FareStart Restaurant. It’s $24.95, which is a pretty good deal for three-courses (doesn’t include tax, tip or drink). Vegetarian options are available.
I haven’t eaten at Moxie yet, but I've been to a class Lauri taught. She made a pan-seared halibut with roasted grapes over a tatsoi salad with Reisling vinaigrette. This thing was soooo good. I am a big time carb-and-cheese girl; it’s hard for me to get excited over (sigh) protein and vegetables. But this halibut and salad was like…pizza-good, people. And I don’t throw that accolade around lightly. I keep meaning to try to make it myself.
Anyway, the FareStart night reservations seem to fill up fast, but there is still room at her night, so it might be worth a shot.
Events at Theo Chocolate
Theo Chocolate is having a variety of events, including a couple that are free.
Every Friday in December, they are holding a Port and Chocolate event (that one costs).
The free ones...on Saturday, December 8, Tom Douglas is doing a book signing that will feature his new cocoa-based barbecue sauce.
On Tuesday, December 18, they will be holding a Chocolate Social with extended holiday shopping hours.
I like giving Theo’s 3400 Phinney bars as gifts or souvenirs for out-of-towners since they are reasonably priced and the company is local. (I can’t stand souvenirs that are not made in the place they are a souvenir for, like what’s the point?) Their chocolate is organic and Fair Trade Certified. I am currently finding myself liking the Coconut Curry bar (with spices like coriander, red pepper, cardamom and mustard) more than I would have anticipated with my occasionally pedestrian, finicky-six-year-old palate; it is just the right mix of sweet and spicy. And it has fenugreek, which is supposed to be good for you, so there.
