Reader Beware
I am feeling a little torn. I did one of the events listed on the highlights last week…and it was not a good time. Like really not a good time.
On the one hand, I feel like I should update things I’ve noted in the past…on the other, there’s already so much negativity on the web, I am just hesitant to add any of my own. Because I write about television online, I generally have to sift through pounds of hateful comments each month directed every which way and after a while it gets to you.
It’s so easy to be critical, when probably most people really are doing their best…and maybe there is some way to be critical in a way that’s ultimately helpful and useful, but I think that might require more effort than I want to invest right now.
So I think I’m going to play by kindergarten rules and say, when it comes to events I actually attend, if I don’t have anything nice to say, I won’t say anything at all. I will also not continue to include the event on the calendar in the future since it’s just for things that either SOUND like fun or I’ve actually confirmed ARE fun.
But when it comes to the former, just know I have been wrong before and – although it really seems impossible for it to happen twice in my lifetime – I might be wrong again, so caveat emptor and so on.
And when it comes to the latter – things I have done and am recommending as actual confirmed fun, just keep in mind that this is all coming from a person who got three (3!) posts out of one (1) small head of bok choi. So…consider the source. (My inner superiority complex is bristling at this caveat and sniffing “My taste is impeccable” but my realistic side can concede everyone will not agree.)
But anyhoodle...’lights! Details on all the below highlights in the actual event in the Seattle Food Events Calendar...
Thursday, Dec 13
- Spend the day thinking, as I just did as I typed out that date, “Um sweet baby jesus in the manger how the hell is it already MID FREAKING DECEMBER?!”
- Reservations open today for the Jan 24 FareStart Guest Chef night with Steve Cain of Waterfront Grill.
- Every weekday until Dec 21, Bastyr University will be having a sale in their bookstore, including books on health and nutrition. Their vegetarian cafeteria has won awards from the Seattle Times and Evergreen Monthly, so maybe grab some lunch while you are there.
- If you haven’t been to Central Cinema, it’s a fun place for dinner and a movie. They have flavored popcorn and we got some kind of mustard and herb kind? Specifics escape me but it was tasty and tons of fun to eat and watch one of my all time favorite ridiculous movies, Lair of the White Worm. That’s not showing tonight, but what is sounds pretty marvelously ridiculous anyway: Santa Conquers the Martians. Plays tonight at 9:15pm, and Friday and Sunday at 7pm and 9:15pm.
Sunday, Dec 16: Third Place Bookstore in Lake Forest Park will be holding their indoor Winter Market.
Monday, Dec 17: Moxie Restaurant in Queen Anne will be offering a holiday shopping boutique within the restaurant with free champagne and small bites. The event is also a food drive.
Tuesday, Dec 18
- Sand Point Metro Market will be holding a bake sale from 3:30pm to 7pm to benefit UNICEF. I only need to hear the words “bake sale” for a visceral sense memory of rice krispie treats and saran-wrapped brownies.
- Tom Douglas Book Signing at Elliott Bay Book Company. I recently worked with a chef who had worked for this giant of the Seattle food scene and while I was hoping for some kind of juicy dish, it turns out that he just sounds like maybe a nice person. Snoozers.
- Chocolate Social at Theo Chocolates. Extended shopping hours and free samples.
Wednesday, Dec 19
- Vegetarians of Washington Gourmet Buffet
- Central Cinema will be running Rope. Okay, so it’s not exactly holiday fare, but if too much holiday time with your relatives is making you fantasize about getting away with murder, this film can act as a cautionary tale. Normally, I don’t like filmsy gimmicks and tricks, but Hitchcock could do whatever the hell he wanted and I'd love it. If you are not familiar with it, the film is shot in a serious of continuous single takes, generally up to ten minutes each. There’s almost no editing in the film except for the cuts needed due to the physical limitations of film reels. Totally ridiculous machismo filmmaking at its finest. And it’s a Jimmy Stewart Hitchcock film, which were always the best. Running twice everyday from Wednesday to Dec 23, 7pm or 9:30pm in case you are up for a late supper.
- The Greenlake PCC will be holding a work packaging party to benefit local food banks.
