Seattle Food Events Calendar Highlights Jan 10 – Jan 16

Looking for Food Events? As of January, 2009, please see my new site: www.FreshPickedSeattle.com!

************************

Allright, we’re back in!  Holiday season is over and there seems to be a lot to do again out and about in Seattle.

Highlights!  Details, locations, contacts, etc., in the Seattle Food Events Calendar.

On-Going:

  • New Urban Eats continues.  See my original post about this event (scroll down to Wed) and some considerations before you reserve.
  • I’ve added all the FareStart event dates and reservation start dates that have been announced so far (through end of March).
  • I’ve also added about half of the PCC Bulk Food Work Packaging parties and wine tastings, but if you don’t see your local PCC, it probably means they come after “Issaquah” in the alphabet and my fingers got tired.  See the PCC website for complete details, will finish this up next week.
  • Don’t forget there are still some Farmers Markets happening despite the season and those are available to view on the overall Food Event Calendar (can also isolate those using the drop-down).
  • One of the folks from the apple tasting a few weeks back showed up at the store last night to take a class.  We had talked about some Seattle tours, and she and her fella had recently taken one of the Savor Seattle Tours, and highly recommended it.
  • They just did the normal one, but apparently Savor Seattle will also be offering Singles Mingle Sundays throughout January.  I will tell you about that here, Dear Reader, but I simply cannot put something called “Singles Mingle” (that's me whispering it) on my calendar.  I have a reputation; I will lose all street cred and be jumped out my gang if I do.

Thursday, Jan 10: Fremont and Issaquah PCC are having a $5 tasting of wines “of the Other Hemisphere.”  You can show up anytime between 6:30-8:00pm to the informal tasting.

Friday, Jan 11
: Taste more booze!  The Malt and Vine Beer and Wine shop is having a tasting of “Dry Ciders.”  No sweet stuff here.  Only $1 for the tasting.

Saturday, Jan 12: Raw Organic Asian Themed Dinner.  Okay.  One of the hosts of the Post-Punk Kitchen, the public access vegan cooking show, noted once that vegans have to put up with a lot of really bad teasing.  And by bad, she didn’t mean the quantity or intensity, she meant the quality.  To paraphrase, if your Uncle insists on making loads of jokes about eating rabbit food, the onus is not on the vegan to be cheery about it, the onus is on the Uncle to come up with better material.  I heartily agree; I’ve been told I was humorless at times when teased about things like that, when, in fact, it was the person teasing who didn’t have enough humor to actually be funny.  I can laugh at myself; you just have to be clever enough to make me.  Anyway, so, because of that, and because of a few years spent as a vegan, I am NOT going to make any jokes about a Raw Organic Asian Themed Dinner.  And I am going to put it in the highlights because you never know.  It might be super tasty.  At the least, it would be an interesting experience.

Sunday, Jan 13: Union is holding a Gumbo Cook-Off, where local chefs will compete to make the best gumbo.  $50, which seems pricey (isn’t gumbo – despite its proteins – like my fave kinda thing: peasant food??) but the proceeds will benefit Northwest Harvest.

Monday, Jan 14

  • It’s back!! Wait, let’s add a few more exclamation points: !!!!!!  Mac and Cheese on Mondays is back at the Wines of Washington central, The Tasting Room.  They will get some Beechers mac and cheese and pair with some wines.  While I’m thrilled this returned since my friend was sick last go-round and we missed it, I am bummed this didn’t happen while the President of the Debate Club was here since she and her spouse love mac and cheese.  Oh well – next visit.
  • Tilth is going to hold their final Organic Panel Dinner.  Eat some tasty-sounding food (see menu in event itself) while listening to a panel of experts and advocates discussing organics.  Not sure if this is last for the season or 4-eva, but it’s the last, so check it out whilst you’re able.

Wednesday, Jan 16

  • Yes, I’m going to keep telling you about Central Cinema when they are showing something my latent film snob/film geek genes approve of because (again) their flavored popcorn and salads were super delicious.  Animated film Iron Giant is starting on Wed.  I haven’t seen it, but nevertheless I approve of its pedigree.  You may view (making benevolent dictator hand gesture).
  • Vegetarians of Washington are having their monthly gourmet buffet. See event for reservation info.
